Sun Village is a foster home for children whose parents go to prison are left to fend for themselves. Imagine what it would be like as a child to watch the police bust through the door and drag your parents off to prison — for months, years, or even a lifetime behind bars. Sun Village understands that whatever the parents did, it’s not the child’s fault — and provides these kids a second chance to create a life outside of the shadow of their parents’ mistakes.

Check out all the ways you can support Sun Village’s mission. Do your part to help kids of convicts have a bright future.
Visitors are always welcome down at the Sun Village farm and foster home in Shunyi Discrict, Beijing.
On weekends, Sun Village opens up their market with fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, and other quaint trinkets to take home as a souvenir. Plan for a day when the Sun Village restaurant is cooking up some appetizing organic food grown, cooked, and served right on the farm.

Sun Village keeps it really flexible when it comes to how you can volunteer to help out. You can come in for just one day, schedule a few hours every once in a while, or — if you find your calling — even live and volunteer at Sun Village full time. Whatever works for your schedule! As an added perk, volunteers get lunch and dinner for free — healthy organic cooking grown right on the farm.
Sun Village welcomes volunteers to choose for themselves how they’d like to help, just as long as it fits the organization’s needs. Here are some fun examples of how people have volunteered in the past:
- Teaching the kids and and helping them with homework
- Cooking or cleanup for Sun Village’s famous lunches and dinners
- Getting your hands dirty doing some farm work
- Taking care of the toddlers who aren’t old enough for school
- Planning a fun-filled extracurricular activity, like arts & crafts, sports, music
You know you what you like and what you’re good at best, so Sun Village know how you think you can help — they’re really open to your ideas.
Get a child what he or she needs to live, learn, and bloom into a bright young adult. A donation of 5000 RMB can support a child’s living expenses for a full year, including essentials, food, education, medicine and more. Learn more about how to donate and how the money will be put to use at Sun Village’s child sponsorship page.
Or for a lesser sum, you can sponsor a tree on the Sun Village farm. A one-time donation of 150 RMB help grow a jujube plant (Chinese date). Then, visit the farm at harvest to collect the jujubes, or let the Sun Village staff harvest and sell the fruits.

Sun Village is a pioneer of Beijing’s volunteer community in operation since 1996. Founder Shuqin Zhang — a Class One prison supervisor herself — learned quickly the harsh circumstances children of the local judicial system face, without parents to provide the basics of a healthy, happy childhood.
So she packed up her bags, headed to Beijing, and started Sun Village with a dream to help Chinese children of convicts grow up to become educated, valuable members of society — unburdened by their family history.
Fast forward to today, Sun Village is building hope for children of incarcerated parents at a larger scale than ever. The headquarters remain in Beijing, but they’ve opened up 9 children’s villages across China. Over 500 kids a call Sun Village home — where the team provides housing, food, education, medical care, and the emotional support a kid needs to grow up with self confidence.
Sun Villages contribution reaches much further than these 9 locations, too. Through donations and cooperative projects, Sun Village offers financial support to over 5,000 children of convicts across China.
In Beijing, Sun Village’s famous farm house is located in Shunyi District, with homes for both boys and girls ages ranging from toddlers to teens. Staff and children share responsibility to keep the center sustainable, so they all lend a helping hand when farming fresh fruits and vegetables, doing housework and chores, passing along knowledge and support.
For children who’s parents are in prison, force to fend for themselves, Sun Village gives the kids a second chance to choose their own life path.
