CandleX is a community of mental health advocates — raising awareness and offering support for people affected by depression and bipolar disorder. As mental illness remains a misunderstood and taboo topic in modern China, CandleX aims to reduce this social stigma, and provide transformational education and support.

Volunteer opportunities ❤️
Does someone you know suffer from a mental health condition? In today’s fast-paced, high-pressure, social-media-fueled society — mental health problems are more common than you think. Join CandleX to educate yourself, raise awareness, and provide support to make Beijing a happier place.
Depression is lonely. Any form of sympathy can make a big difference. “My Story with Depression” is CandleX’s online column of real local people sharing their own struggles with mental health through written word. If you or someone close to you has experience facing mental health challenges, then your story is worth reading. Email CandleX to learn more, then write and publish your story.
Bipolar disorder affects more people than you’d think. To raise awareness, CandleX created MoodLab Bipolar Awareness Campaign with aims to express the emotional aspects of bipolar disorder through artistic media.
Currently on display are a series of black and white photographs by Spanish photographer Pere Ibañez, depicting the emotional states felt by people diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
You’re invited to follow and share the campaign on CandleX’s MoodLab page.
Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 19:30 to 21:00, CandleX gathers a small group to join a structured peer support circle in Beijing’s CBD area, specifically for English speakers suffering from mania, depression, severe anxiety or other serious mental health conditions. Please fill out CandleX’s application form. (To maintain integrity and privacy of the group, CandleX asks that only serious people apply, and reserves the right to refuse any applicant.)
Do you enjoy writing or content creation? Meeting people and building win-win collaborative opportunities? Or, you’re just super-passionate about the cause?
CandleX lists official volunteer positions such as social media content producer, fundraising manager, and executive assistant. They’re also open to create a unique position for you to emphasize your strengths, skills — communications, graphic designs, public speaking, event organizing, partnership building, editing, coordination — whatever it is that makes you special!
It’s all about personal growth, so let CandleX know how you’d like to help. Visit CandleX’s volunteer page for more details.
CandleX is building a world where mental health conditions are acknowledged, accepted, and supported — starting right here with Beijing’s international community. It’s a safe place where English speakers can find support, resources, events, and campaigns for awareness around the topic of mental illnesses like depression and bipolar disorder.
The community organizes, hosts, and sponsors regular activities around Beijing, including:
- A bi-monthly mental health peer support group held in Beijing CBD.
- MoodLab bipolar awareness campaign — spreading knowledge and understanding through artistic media.
- Workshops that helps people learn more about managing emotions and mental health for oneself or loved ones.
- Workshops that specifically address mental health issues teenagers may face.
- … and more!
CandleX’s efforts make Beijing China’s best location for affordable, accessible mental health support. They offer online resources allowing people to privately learn more about depression — from why, and what, to how you can get support. And CandleX’s “My Story with Depression” column invites people to contribute their own experience facing mental health problems — real stories that give hope to people suffering from mental health conditions.
